As a self taught crafter, I have spent the last 20 years perfecting my craft. I make good craft out of anything that interest me.

My biggest hobby is crafting, my profession is Art. I try to separate the two but one is done out of duty and the other is my passion.

Craft happens to be my Passion, it might be difficult to make and tiny items might take long questionable hours or days, but it is worth it at the end.

I keep making crafted items because our lives revolve around crafts, from soft furnishing, pottery, crocheting, jewelry making, sewing, weaving, dressmaking, pastry, food, decoupage, furniture making, iron casting, you name it they are all crafts and the craftsmanship behind these crafts, are intense and takes a lot of painstaking hard work.

I have learned all these years of teaching myself how to make good crafted items, through books, videos and TV shows is, people will pay good money for a good craft item, and that is a motivation for me.

Craft is my first creative love before anything art, I do have a degree in fine and applied art and I went further to read interior design, but craft is it for me.

TRADITONAL
HEAD SCARF(GELE) TURNED INTO MAKEUP PURSES.

That is why my visit to my home country is always an interesting one anytime. There is so much I can apply my craft sense to back home, it is absolutely astonishing.

I get to bring back with me to Johannesburg, the rich culture of my people, in bits and pieces which I turn into something whole, it is a true delight.

Since I don't live in Nigeria, I live in South Africa, it is always exciting when I visit my home country and felicitate with family. It is always a good feeling.

LACE FABRIC

I have the opportunity of visiting art galleries and enjoying the art culture which is strong indeed.

I try not to view my country from the lens of an outsider or tourist, but as one who understands the culture and society even though I'm barely there.
I collect all sorts from beads to fabrics to ropes, baskets, dyes etc.

That brings me to this blog post, because it is centered around fabric gifts from my sisters. I am gifted these fabulous ornate lace pieces which are remnant pieces, from lace blouses or wrappers used to make male and female traditional outfits in my country.

LACE FABRIC PIECES USED FOR THESE DECOR
VASE AND PLATTER, ARE FROM MY SISTERS

ME WORKING  WITH LACE FABRIC PIECES IN MY STUDIO IN JOHANNESBURG

ALMOST FINISHED ? NOT YET! IT IS TAKING SOME FIVE YEARS
TO FIGURE OUT....

I in turn, use these fabric pieces to make decoupage crafted items or sometimes even art as you will view further down and sell them for good prices to the shock and surprise of family.

Shopping

They take time to make, I have to figure out what the fabric will be best suited for. Once I have move past that challenge I go to work, on something with the fabric, which at this time has been cut out around the ornate shapes it provides.

That's the reason  I try to create Art and craft that are dear to my heart always. I would ask family my sisters especially, for fabric scraps of traditional lace fabrics because they are
beautiful and ornate in look and feel.

I try to see beyond the fashion aspect of the fabric and view it, with the lens of an artisan crafts person.

These fabrics trust me are unique to the Nigerian, they are heavy ornate lace, heavily embroidered, bright in color and textured in structure.

I always ask my sisters for any leftovers because the fabrics are crafted in a way that is art already.

GUIPURE LACE ON GLASS VASE

My sisters, who have always supported my art no matter what, don't hold back when I request for all their old traditional scarves, fabrics and so on.

LACE WITH STONES REPURPOSED ON GLASS VASE

They always give me all I need. They may not  understand fully why I need dated traditional clothes, but one thing is certain for them, it would be turned into crafts, bags, fashion purses and also incorporated into a painting to make art.

So I present to you gifts from my sisters......

Transforming a Vintage Mannequin into a Unique Lamp Shade for Your Home Decor by Miabo Enyadike

Transforming a Vintage Mannequin into a Unique Lamp Shade for Your Home Decor My home is my sanctuary, art gallery and art studio/family house so I live and breath Art.  I want to live in constant inspiration and ideas, I love to wake up in that kind of space. Natural light plays a huge part in my home, as light helps to project my Art giving my living room a gallery feel. But come evening, I just want to relax with my family, cook dinner and enjoy the evening in calmness. And that brings me to my Vintage Mannequin Stand I decided to turn into a night lamp stand.  I Love different light designs, for me, it completes an interior. Beautiful light fittings, say a lot about the design aesthetics of a room and creates, a certain type of drama and ambiance in that room.   When I bought, a metal mannequin for my studio, a lamp stand, was the furthest thing in my mind.  I used it solely to hang knitted bags, beads and clothes. Early this year...

Expressionist Abstract Art of Women by Miabo Enyadike

Expressionist Abstract Art of Women  Drawing women and their expressions is something, I am truly interested in. Female profiles and faces in abstract is intriguing and Ink drawings, are a way for me to throw that notion out there, of a female portrait created differently.  This is something that is important to me as a woman artist, this matters.                                                                                                                 I draw faces in a way that is uncomplicated  and easy to read, in a rather caricature way though not comical, with ink, it is easy to let the colors flow so that they create for me, the facial contours and structure.  My emphasis...
