Tidal Waves

I love Sea gazing ( if I can describe watching the sea as that), for someone who can't swim it is really ironic. Being on the beach is a no brainer if I'm on holidays, I love to watch the waves go up and down like a rhythm.

Sometimes they really are huge, and different color reflections, embody these waves and I'm always in awe of natures power to create Art, out of nothing and best our imagination!

My Artist focus for this month of September, is Ogunlesi Paul Oyetunde, a young Nigerian Artist whose artworks is inspired by humanity and his immediate society.

His style of painting is focused on Portraiture and an honest expression of the human face, with regards to real people portraying real expressions.

I can relate to Ogunlesi's realistic paintings of expressions with emotions and how he draws inspiration from people because I am also inspired by the human expressions and faces around me, I just create mine in abstract.

The reason, I think Ogunlesi is a young Nigerian Artist to watch is because of his focus and sheer genius of the understanding of the human face and how it is structured.

He's ability, to create wholesome portraits of his subject, that immediately tells you the story of this subject and the society they belong to and represent is telling of an artist, who not only paints well but understands the background of his subjects.
I also love the fact that, his art is conscious of the environment in which he works because he paints on news prints (old newspapers,) which creates a textured surface for his art.

In turn, he reduces waste subtly and selflessly creates art and awareness, about simple recycling and upcycling of newspapers in a respected and appreciated manner, which is indeed inspiring.

Below is Ogunlesi Paul's Bio and accomplishments:

 Artist Statement

Art to me is a reflection of who I am, my experiences, my environment and all that makes up my African society.

I can't describe myself, except that I am always the focal point of my art, irrespective of the subject, I create. My art represents me and portrays my impression of any subject I paint, in a way that everyone witnessing my work, can understand the story I'm telling, because it is art, a universal Language.

Whenever I get travel or holiday destination magazines in the mail,
I immediately toss away the previous holiday destination, I had in mind away and start dreaming of another cool destination to visit.

These travel magazines, always unconsciously tell you, that you are missing out. We know they are out to get us, into holidaying in some place anyway.

Last week,I discovered a huge pile of magazines. Sorting through my magazine pile, for interior decorating ideas in order to create a mood board for a project.

I discovered, I have a huge pile of  travel/holiday destination magazines.

The pages, were filled with awesome colors. I'm  a hoarder by all means,so just imagine a 3 year stockpile.

I sat down, took my time flipping through the pages, dreaming about the different exotic locations.
The brilliant editorial, display of these destination were tempting.

By the time I was half through it occurred to me, that I had drifted from the reason I was looking through the magazines in the  first place.

It was to find art inspirations, ideas and magazine pages with strong colours, I could use to create art and craft for interior decorating and art purpose.

Since I was not travelling anywhere soon, I could create an abstract art collage with cut outs, from the pages of the holiday magazine.

I stenciled the background, to create a sense of wonder. I then used the magazine cut out, to create an abstract art face with different holiday destinations.

That would include travelling arrangement, hotel rates and packages, showing a glimpse of what goes through our minds, when we read these holiday destination magazines.

All we want is a place to refresh, relax, rejuvenate and dream away.

These magazines provide that avenue, in our minds and tell us it is possible.

Though we may be home at the time, once we get hold of any of these holiday publications we go into dream mode.

This abstract art series, represents that and further illustrates how important the holidays are to us.
